FAQ
What about helmets ?
You must wear a helmet when you drive in Thailand. Fine is 600 bahts + you can get stopped and fined every 24h if you’re not the lucky kind.
NEW since 2025, Ohlala now have great and secure DOT (USA) and/or ECE (european) certified helmets also TO SELL. With 3 types of prices and quality from 590 (BASIC | asian shape & size), 1,090 DOT certified + 1,490 for DOT and/or ECE even better helmets. Vintage or sporty contemporary designs.
The helmets we lend with a rent for FREE like every rental shops in Thailand are of course good, but asian shape and size, so it often turns to be too small or uncomfortable for some. Western helmets are molded to a length-to-width ratio of approximately 1.3. In contrast, Asian heads are generally rounder so helmets have an average length-to-width ratio of 1.16.
You may, therefore, be inspired to have your own helment as : size, yes, IS really important for your security in addition to the material quality of the helmets.
Big size helmets that will fit more oval international heads are not easy to find in Phuket but NOW it is at Ohlala for your security, comfort and of course amazing style ! Come to check our models and different sizes.
NEW also in 2025 : we may buy your used helmet depending on its’ condition with your Ohlala proof of purchase but only DOT or ECE helmets, meaning the ones at 1,090 or 1,490 bahts. We will not buy helmets bought at other shops.
So, don’t hesitate to ask us for a price for your helmet when you return your scooter.
What licence do I need ?
You must carry with you an international licence to drive in Thailand . Your regular national licence is not enough. Police fine is 1,000 bahts for not holding a thai or international licence with you.
Storage boxes ?
We have plenty ! For 125cc to bigger scooters and that is one of many aspects that makes Ohlala stands out !
Everybody agrees that it quickly becomes very handy not to say necessary if you plan to drive more than just to the beach. It is also much appreciated by the persons on the back of the drivers to be even more well sited with their backs supported
Any mobile phones holders ?
Yes, most of our scooters do have mobile phone holders pre-installed. Kindly not that any damaged one at your return will be charged to you. Please check also the state of it before your first kilometers. You may now also buy yours for 300 bahts.
Do you have Insurance ?
We do have “Por Ror Bor” but note that it is a basic compulsory third-party liability insurance in Thailand that will only cover you inside Phuket. It comes with annual taxes registration of a scooter. It will not cover the repair costs of the scooter.
We strongly recommend to contract a thai insurance like AXA Thailand, Type1 policy or an international one. Both can be quickly done online.
This because “Por Ror Bor” gives basic medical coverage only up to 30,000 bahts, not repairs or steals. It is also a bit complicated and time-consuming to do all the paperwork. Even more so being a non-local.
To claim Por Ror Bor you have to inform cashier at hospital that you would like to claim for Por Ror Bor. Later, you will be reimbursed by the insurance, providing :
- A copy of your passport
- A copy of your bank account book if local
- The receipt of the medical expense
- A copy of the Por Ror Bor policy
- A copy of the vehicle registration
- A copy of your driving licence
- A police report *
* To get a police report :
- Visit a police station in the area where you had the accident
- Bring a passport with you
- Some police stations may ask for a copy of the house registration or rental contract if your a local
- Bring a Thai person with you if you do not speak thai to help you with translation
Note that to obtain the maximum coverage from Por Ror Bor, a police report should clearly state that you are not the cause of the accident !
If you are not the cause of the accident, and only in that case, the coverage may increase as follows:
- Injuries: 80,000 bahts
- Daily allowance for hospitalization: 200 bahts per day but only up to a maximum of 20 days
Do I have to pay if I have an accident ?
Yes, even if you have an insurance. It is of your responsibility to manage and be reimbursed with your insurance or Por Ror Bor inside Phuket later on.
We work with official Yamaha and Honda garages and will provide an invoice as quick as possible to show the repairs needed, planned, or already done and thus for you to pay. Repairs are in no way negotiable. We work with official professional garages for added safety of our motorbikes. We only decide which garage we repair and maintain our motorbikes with. Scooters are close to same prices all around the world, so are the repair parts.
Leaving without paying, is not a wise choice. We will inform the police and you risk to get stopped at your hotel, the airport and/or will have trouble coming back to Thailand. We may also inform your local authorities.
For flat tires it is ok to have it repaired at a shop but at your own expenses. For other repairs, you have to call us before for us to agree with the garage and/or to arrange a repatriation.
Kindly call and inform us as soon as possible should you have an accident so we may assist you as reasonably as we can.
What insurance would you recommend ?
It is for sure a wise idea to contract a private insurance policy even for a short stay.
You may well be insured through your health care insurance home, or it might be covered by your travel insurance. Make sure you know if any of the passengers are covered on your medical plan or any third party liability too. Keep a close eye on the conditions that might void your coverage also like not having a valid license, helmet, etc. Some of these insurances cover only up to 125cc motorbikes too.
Ohlala recommends Type1 insurance only in Thailand as all of our motorbikes are less than 7 years old but mainly because it covers about all risks, including accidents for yourself or a third-party for big motos too. Plus, we work with official Yamaha and Honda garages 95% of the time so the other types of insurance will not cover the repairs.
There are four levels of motorbike insurances in Thailand, namely:
- Type 1 – The most expensive level, Type 1 insurance is mostly for big (250cc +) bikes and/or newer (less than seven years old) bikes. Type 1 insurance offers coverage for just about every eventuality, including non third-party accidents.
- Type 2+ – Essentially the same as Type 1, except Type 2+ does not cover incidents in which a third party was not involved. Under a Type 2+ insurance policy, your coverage will only cover repairs at an independent garage, not an official (e.g Honda) garage.
- Type 2 – Offers the same coverage as Type 2+, but does not cover accidents.
- Type 3+ – This policy will cover you for accidents and collisions, but not damage from another cause (e.g fire, flood, theft etc.). However, it is cheaper than the above policies.
Axa Thailand is a fair choice but is of course not the only one. There are many international insurances to find and contract quickly online.
Can I have a discount ?
We are in Thailand, you may well insist but 99% of the time, sorry but no, we don’t offer discounts. Unleast for regular known customers of the restaurant or you can prove you have rented before over 2 weeks in the last 3 years (copy of contract or email).
We have made the choice to prioritize quality and security working with professional garages. High maintenance on recent motorbikes throughout the whole year with a large and dedicated staff, 7 days a week from 8am till 10pm.
As such, prices are at its’ lowest while, we know the market perfectly : super competitive. You may find some a little bit cheaper at some other shops for sure, if price is your only criteria of choice.
I can't start my motorcycle ! Why ?
Close to 90% customers calling us for this problem actually just forgot to check if the motorcycle stand is still on… A motorcycle with the stand still on will, of course, not start. Please be kind to check before calling.
Any other useful advises ?
- Find a quality helmet of your size and use it, fine is 600 bahts for not wearing one everytime you get stopped by the Police
- Make sure you have a good insurance for accidents and third-parties liabilties. If not, contract one, its quickly done online nowadays
- Take video and/or photo of the moto before the first meters of your ride. This is an advise to use anywhere in the world for nearly any kind of rentals
- Use front + rear brakes to avoid to slip easily in rainy/wet conditions. Sand on dry roads can also turn to be very slippery
- Remember we drive on the left in Thailand. Many accidents are mainly due to tourists forgetting this
- Be careful how and where you park. Leave enough space to avoid scratches. Places like Patong are very sensitive for parking. It’s much more clever to pay for a safe parking spot then repairs later on
- When you open your scooter storage, always make sure your key is with you or in your pocket before closing. Some people lock the storage with key inside
- Stay on the island of Phuket. If you go outside the island, you will not be covered by Por Ror Bor insurance. Repatriation of the scooter will also be to your full expenses
- Enjoy your stay, be kind and polite to locals too and of course don’t drink or take drugs and drive
- Don’t hesitate to call if we can reasonably help or assist you
Do you have or will you have bigger motos ?
YES ! We update the park of our motos more regularly than our website. This is true particularly in high season. So stop by the restaurant to check out current scooters or contact us
Do you sell scooters ?
Yes we do sell regularly second hand scooters ! But almost never between november till february during high season. Call : +082 829 3097 or write to us at ohalalakamala@gmail.com to take your chance.
What makes Ohlala so successful ?
